PAINT IT UP

Hello I'm Michelle Smith and I run painting classes for everyone even if you have never held a paintbrush in your life, I also sell resin ocean-inspired art and I have my own colouring book. I graduated from Duncan of Jordan School of art in Dundee with an honors degree in Textile design then right after graduation I flew off to New York where I spent 12 years living and working in the fashion industry making prints for clothing and interiors, then the next 4 year spent in Seattle where I ran the art department for a large fashion and lifestyle company. After 16 years in corporate America, my husband and I decided to slow down a little and we moved back home to my beloved Scotland to raise our children. When I arrived nobody was teaching these fun casual classes where anybody and everybody can learn to paint, after about 100 classes teaching people to paint a highland coo I have branched out to watercolour classes. I have also developed a love of resin, not the easiest medium to use but I absolutely love it and hope you will too.

OCEAN RESIN ART

This has been my passion for the past year, discovered during the lockdown in 2020 I headed to the garage and started to create. Resin is a tricky and nonforgiving medium to use, a lot of trial and error, getting the mixing correct, the temperature correct, getting it dust-free is all a challenge, setting a few small fires with my blowtorch,(oops) but when you get it right the end result is just beautiful.
Inspired by the beautiful blue ocean each unique piece is built up with layers of resin poured to emulate the flow of the waves on the beach. Real sand is used and glued onto painted wooden boards then the real fun begins with the resin colored with mica powders, ink, and varieties of paint is poured on then heated with a blow torch and then the white of the cresting waves is the final step blown with the heat gun to create the foamy waves on the sand.
each piece is 100% original and I don't make prints of my art so you know you're getting a one-of-a-kind piece.

Flowers of Scotland

image1.jpeg
Flowers of Scotland is a beautiful botanical filled colouring book.
I created this 30-page colouring book when I moved back to Scotland. With my career in textile designing and years of making prints and patterns, this was a labour of love for me. Scotland has many unique and interesting flowers to choose from it was so hard to decide what to put in this book. I thought carefully about the size of the flowers and lines in this book so if you print it on watercolour paper it's the perfect size to make beautiful paintings. Right now you will receive a digital download that you print out, designed so you can print the whole book or print one page at a time, the price of £5.99 reflects this.

FAQ'S

What is a Paint It Up night like?
Quite simply, it's a really fun, informal night out where an artist will walk you through step-by-step instructions to create a painting that you get to take home to show off your hidden artistic skills to family and friends.
What do I need to bring?
Just yourself! You will be provided with your own canvas and paints. We will provide the use of a jazzy apron (to protect your clothes), brushes and an easel.
Did you mention wine?
Yes! Our guests will be provided with their first glass of wine, beer, or a soft drink of their choice. Additional drinks may be purchased directly from the venue.
Do I need to be able to paint?
Absolutely not, even if you have never held a paintbrush before! This is a fun, easy-going night out, but you never know... you might just surprise yourself!
May I bring a group? If so, may we sit together?
We will do everything in our power to get you next to your friends. If you are a group of 10 or more people, you can choose the design for the painting. We do birthday parties, hen nights, family reunions, date nights... you name it! We are pretty easy going and will try and accommodate your every whim.
How much does it cost?
Good question. Usually £25 per person.  More if I have to pay to use the venue (hopefully you understand some venues are quite expensive) This includes the canvas, the paint, the instruction and a drink. For private and corporate events I'm trying to keep cost at £20 per person.
How long does it take?
About 2 to 2 1/2 hours depending on the complexity of the painting.
How do I know what I'll be painting?
Please see the calendar. This will provide the time, dates, and venue of each class. If you see a painting you like but it's not happening at a time when you can attend, please email us and we can try and sort something out for you.
I have a venue where I'd like you to host a class. Can you do it?
Perfect! We love new venues. Please email and let us know. Don't worry if you don't have an alcohol license. We can do  Coffee and Canvas,  Cakes and Canvas... we can work it out together!
Can I hire you for a birthday party?
Yes, we love doing birthday parties. It cost £15  per child, the birthday child can pick whatever painting they want to do, its 10 children minimum and 30 maximum. The price may be adjusted if it's over 30 miles from Dundee. All I need is a big table, chairs, and access to a tap, I bring everything else with me.
Do you do corporate events?
Yes, its brilliant for team building and being creative is proven to reduce stress and increase productivity. Please get in touch for details?
